Contents Preparation and microscope observation of plant and animal materials.

Reference texts Teaching material will be provided during the laboratory exercises.
Educational objectives The main aim of the teaching is to provide students with the bases needed to use the microscope, fundamental instrument for the biologist.
The main knowledges acquired will be:
parts of the optical microscope and stereomicroscope,
how to use the optical microscope and stereomicroscope,
protocols to prepare fresh biological material and cytological and histological slides from plant and animal organisms.
The main skills will be:
how to use the optical microscope and stereomicroscope,
application of the protocols above mentioned.
Prerequisites In order to ensure that the attendance in the laboratory exercises will be fruitful, it is useful that the students have passed the Cytology and Histology, Botany, and Zoology exams.
Teaching methods The course is organized in laboratory exercises at the Educational Laboratory. Students will be divided into groups (maximum 25 students per group) and they will attend to 6 lab exercises of 4 hours each. Lab exercises will be tutored, and will also be held in collaboration with Cytology and Histology or Zoology teachers. Attendance is mandatory.
Other information
Learning verification modality There is not final exam. However, in order to acquire the "2 cfu" (corresponding to 24 hours), the student will have to attend at least 20 hours (75%) of laboratory exercises. Frequency will be verified by roll-call and signature take-over.
Extended program Microscopy techniques. Optical and fluorescence microscope; stereomicroscope. Preparation and observation of fresh biological material: microscope examination of zooplankton and phytoplankton, and plant tissues. Use of the stereomicroscope to observe macroscopic Invertebrates. Use of the plant and animal keys. Preparation and observation of cytological and histological slides from plant and animal organisms.
