Educational objectives The module covers three fundamental aspects of modern industrial production: 1) automation in manufacturing: how automation technologies are embodied in the form of computer numerical control, industrial robotics and discrete/logic controllers; 2) production systems: how manufacturing machines, material transport, storage systems, and operators are organized and interconnected in a production plant; and 3) computer integrated manufacturing: how IT and ICT allow the interconnection between the production facility and manufacturing support systems (product design, process planning, process control and business functions).
The module illustrates the main technologies and available solutions, and is aimed at providing the future engineer and manager with the necessary understanding of modern manufacturing and the necessary tools to support decision making. The module is designed to provide the fundamentals as well as hands-on experience with the collaboration of industrial partners.
