Contents Virus structure, virus classification. Replication strategie of the viruses that infect humans: DNA viruses, positive-strand RNA viruses, negative-strand RNA viruses, duoble-stranded RNA-viruses and viruses that use a reverse trascriptase. Application fields of molecular virology: antiviral chemotherapy, viral vectors and vaccines.

Educational objectives The aim of the course is to provide the basic theoretical and practical notions of virology. In particular, issues related to the replication of the different viral families will be addressed by deepening the molecular aspect. The last part of the program will focus on applying this knowledge to the development of vaccines, antiviral drugs and the use of viruses as vectors.
Prerequisites Basic knowledge of virology
Teaching methods The course will be held through lectures in which the professor explains the basics, also through the aid of visual aids.
Other information Attendance is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.
Learning verification modality The student will have to take an oral test aimed at verifying: the ability to understand the main aspects concerning the topics covered during the course; the ability to autonomously elaborate connections between different topics, the quality of the oral exposition.
Students with disabilities and/or DSA are invited to visit the page dedicated to the tools and measures provided and to agree in advance with the teacher what is necessary (https://www.unipg.it/disabilita-e-dsa).
Extended program Virus structure, virus classification. Replication strategie of the viruses that infect humans: DNA viruses (Adenovirus, Herpesvirus, Poxvirus), positive-strand RNA viruses (Picornavirus, Coronavirus, Flavivirus), negative-strand RNA viruses (Paramyxovirus, Orthomyxovirus, Filovirus), duoble-stranded RNA-viruses (Reobvirus) and viruses that use a reverse trascriptase (HBV, Retrovirus). Application fields of molecular virology: antiviral chemotherapy, viral vectors and vaccines.
