Educational objectives Give to the student an understanding of the fundamental nature. Knowledge of the basic constituents of the matter and interactions between particles and matter. Be familiar with simple kinematics calculations. Being and introductory course theoretical aspects cannot be treated in a rigorous way.
Prerequisites Quantum theory and statistical mechanics.
Teaching methods Frontal lessons
Other information
Learning verification modality Oral exam
Extended program Relativistic kinematics: Lorentz transformations for energy and momentum. Invariant mass. Transformation ot he scattering angle.
Interaction of particles with matter: ionization (Bethe-Bloch formula), interaction of electrons and photons (electromagnetic showers, radiation length and critical energy).
Basic concepts: interactions of particles, range of force, Yukawa theory. Pions and muons: prediction of the pi meson, discovery of the pion and of the muon. The neutral pion: determination of the mass and of the lifetime. The spin and the isotopic spin of the pion. Neutrinos and quarks: electron neutrino and further generations. Lepton universtality and decays. Quarks, general properties of the hadrons. Strange particles, charm and beauty.
