| Educational objectives | The main aim of the course is to bring the students to the acquisition of the general course contents and of the methodological and critical instruments useful for the analysis of the proposed texts. At the end of the course the student will be able to master the contents of the literary period in exam and to face the analysis of the literary text in its thematic and formal aspects through the use of adequate methodologies and critical approaches. The expected learning outcomes are defined according to the European parameters described by the five Dublin descriptors: 1) Knowledge and understanding: general knowledge and understanding of the historical and cultural context of the period from the origins to the Golden Age, with particular attention to the most significant works and authors; acquisition of the adequate theoretical and methodological tools to analyze and interpret the main literary texts of the considered period; 2) Applying knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to recognize the historical-literary framework of reference, the different literary genres to which the works in the program can be ascribed and their thematic and stylistic peculiarities; from a comparative perspective, the student will be able to activate critical approaches and interdisciplinary connections; 3) Making judgements: the student will be able to develop, with appropriate methods and tools, a critical reflection on the topics covered in the course; 4) Communication skills: the student will be able to present the acquired knowledge with a clear exposition and using the vocabulary and terminology appropriate; 5) Learning skills: the student will have developed the skills necessary to expand, even independently, his knowledge of Spanish literature and to identify study and learning methods and strategies useful for achieving the educational objectives set by the entire degree course in Foreign Languages and Cultures. |
| Prerequisites | In order to be able to understand and apply methods and notions discussed within the course, students are required to know the fundamentals of literary criticism and critical tools. |
| Teaching methods | Seminary style taught classes. An adequate space will be dedicated to the analysis of the mentioned texts, in order to familiarize the students with the methodological and critical instruments used for the analysis of literary texts. |

| Learning verification modality | The exam consists of a final oral test. The speaking test will consist of a conversation which will last about half an hour and which will also concern the texts, read and commented in the classroom; it will be aimed at checking both the comprehension and the ability to apply the knowledge acquired during the course. The first question will be in Spanish language, then the student will decide whether to continue in Spanish or in Italian. Students with disabilities and/or with SLD who, having completed regular accreditation through SOL, have obtained access to University services, can apply for compensatory tools, dispensatory measures and inclusive technologies ensured by law, to be requested and agreed with the teacher well in advance of tests and exams. | Extended program | The course explores the developing of literary production in Castilian language from the beginnings to Golden Age. More specifically, the course will cover the following topics: The historical, cultural and literary Spanish context of the considered period. The jarchas mozárabes. The mester de juglaría. The epic tradition and the Cantar de mio Cid. Origins of the medieval theater and the Representación de los Reyes Magos. The mester de clerecía: from Gonzalo de Berceo to the Libro de Buen Amor of Juan Ruiz. Origins of Castilian prose: Alfonso X el Sabio. Don Manuel’s Conde Lucanor. The Romancero. The lyric poetry or lírica cancioneril. The Coplas por la muerte de su padre de Jorge Manrique. La Celestina of Fernando de Rojas. Prose and theater of the first and second Golden Age. |
