Educational objectives |
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Knowledge: The course has a dual objective: to encourage students to reflect on the importance of translation as a bridge between different cultures and peoples, and at the same time to guide them toward achieving B2 and B2+ language proficiency. Competences: By the end of the course, students are expected to have an in-depth knowledge of metalinguistic terminology and various aspects of a descriptive-analytical model of Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. They should also be proficient in all communicative skills at the B2+ level, according to the standards set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Capabilities: Contribute to the development of communication skills, application of their knowledge and refinement of learning practices. To mature an adequate capacity for critical judgement also in function of autonomous paths of research and in-depth study. The knowledge acquired at the end of the course can be applied by students in a future professional context both in school teaching following the qualification processes and in cultural institutions and literary publishing and translation. |

Prerequisites |
Brazilian Portuguese language level for the third year of the bachelor's degree program. |

Teaching methods |
The course consists of classroom lectures on all subjects of the program and will be held entirely in Portuguese. The teacher will encourage the participatory intervention by the students both with the request for any clarifications or with the expression of personal opinions. The project will promote active reception of the course content which, in turn, allow a weighted acquisition of the contents. |

Other information |
There is the possibility of organizing a publication with the translations carried out by the students, especially regarding selected texts by Monteiro Lobato, as they have been in the public domain since 2019. |

Learning verification modality |
The exam will be divided into two phases. The first phase requires students to write a short paper commenting on a translation of their choice from those proposed by the instructor. This paper will be graded on a scale of thirty. The coherence, appropriateness, accuracy, and thoroughness of the paper will serve as the starting point for the oral exam, which will focus on the student's choices, motivations, and reflections, as well as on theoretical principles of translation theory. At the end of the oral exam, a second grade will be assigned, also on a scale of thirty. The final grade for this part of the course will be the mathematical average of the two scores. Student participation in class discussions on the types of translations presented will also be taken into account when assigning the final grade. Students with disabilities and / or with DSA: for the modality of carrying out the verification tests, students can take advantage of inclusive technologies, compensatory tools and dispensatory measures provided for by the legislation. Technologies, tools and measures must be requested and agreed with the teacher well in advance of the tests.
