Educational objectives Ability to reproduce and analyze the intonation of the English language. The course has a cumulative approach, starting from the smallest units, from the analysis of vowels and consonants, up to the phonetic analysis of the word, and then approaching phonology. The student will be able to actively understand the international phonetic alphabet, will be able to transcribe English sounds and read the phonetic transcriptions. They will be illustrated, with examples of language, phonology at the level of stress on the word, the intonation of the sentence and related speech, and contextual aspects.
Prerequisites In order to be able to understand and to deal with the course the student must possess the general notions related to the courses: English Language I and English Language II; level B2+. This prerequisite is valid for both attending and non-attending students.
Teaching methods Lectures that will focus on issues related to the theory of phonetics and phonology for both reading and transcription of English.
Practice of listening and analysis of texts.

Other information The foreign language courses consist not only of the official course of the teacher (the only one that "assigns" credits) but also of the laboratory exercises and activities, both held at the Centro Linguistico Ateneo (CLA).
Attendance at CLA is highly recommended.
In order to take the English Language III exam you must have completed English Language I and II; and it is also mandatory to have taken the exam at CLA before you can complete the exam in the English Language III department.

The result of the exam is calculated with the exam performed at the CLA.
In addition we recommend: Anglo American literature and German Philology.

Students will follow a theoretical part on language linguistics and translatological reflection of six-month and/or annual duration, and a practical part, given at the CLA, of annual duration (80 hours) in language learning exercises. The objective of the exercises is to achieve a level of language proficiency [C1 third year, in this case].
Students who hold an international language certification obtained no more than two years are not exempt from the knowledge test held at the end of the annual training courses held at the CLA. This verification is mandatory in order to take the exam with the teacher at the Department.

Learning verification modality There will be mid-term quizzes and final oral exams. The mid-term quizzes will include both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. The results will provide extra points to be added to the final grade, but participation in these quizzes is not mandatory. Every student must take the final oral exam, which will cover all course modules.
Duration of the assessments: mid-term quizzes will last 60 minutes, and oral exams will range from 10 to 20 minutes.
