Educational objectives |
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Knowledge: The course introduces a deeper knowledge of Portuguese-speaking literatures and cultures through, in particular, an immersion in the works that recover one of the most tragic moments in the history of Brazil, which runs from 1964 to 1985, years dominated by the climate of terror linked to the dictatorial regime in force in the country at that time. The writers to the studied are Marcelo Rubens Paiva and Bernando Kucinski. With a vigorous and innovative language, they introduce us to the history of the twentieth century using literature and its ability to allow the elaboration of the traumas that disrupt lives subjected to the loss of loved ones, silencing and deception by agents of the state, and to physical and psychological torture. Narrator and characters in these works lead us by the hand, as Italian writer Primo Levi did in his most visceral works, to the degradation of human beings and their ennobling through intense and poetic words. The goal is to analyse and understand the mechanisms through which literature is an instrument of individual and collective catharsis, essential for its intrinsic ability to keep us human even in the face of the tragic nature of history. Competences: To know how to frame authors, works and phenomena in relation to historical and socio-cultural contexts as well as public and critical reception. To be able to analyse and communicate the main phases and authors of Brazilian and Portuguese literature with a good knowledge of the specific vocabulary. Capabilities: Contribute to the development of communication skills, application of their knowledge and refinement of learning practices. To mature an adequate capacity for critical judgement also in function of autonomous paths of research and in-depth study. The knowledge acquired at the end of the course can be applied by students in a future professional context both in school teaching following the qualification processes and in cultural institutions and literary publishing and translation. |

Teaching methods |
The course consists of classroom lectures on all the topics of the program. The teacher will call the participatory intervention by the students both with the request for any clarifications is the expression of personal opinions. The project will promote active reception of the course content which, in turn, enable a weighted acquisition of the contents thereof. Students with disabilities and/or SLDs may request, in consultation with the lecturer, any teaching materials in accessible formats (presentations, handouts, workbooks), provided if necessary in advance of the lessons, as well as the use of other technological tools to facilitate the study phase. During the course they will be organized a series of activities, such as lectures, panel discussions and film screenings in Portuguese, on the topics and other topics related to the Portuguese and Brazilian cultures. Learning verification modality |
The exam consists of an oral interview lasting about half an hour with an open stimulus, with an open answer on the covered topics and it will be aimed at verifying both the understanding and the ability to apply the knowledge discussed during the course. The final evaluation of the oral examination will be calculated in thirtieths. Students who have attended at least 70 per cent of the lectures will be given the opportunity to take the exemption from some exams in seminar form. Students with disabilities and / or with DSA: for the modality of carrying out the verification tests, students can take advantage of inclusive technologies, compensatory tools and dispensatory measures provided for by the legislation. Programma esteso PROGR_EST Sì Si propone un percorso di approfondimento sui modi e tempi con i quali gli scrittori brasiliani hanno elaborato la memoria e i traumi vissuti durante la dittatura in Brasile che va dal 1964 al 1985. La necessità di riportare a galla tale tema è legata al fatto che l’argomento è diventato di nuovo attuale, sia perché il processo di elaborazione del dolore e del lutto è lungo e complesso, sia per il tentativo di manipolazione ideologica e politica del passato da parte di vari gruppi di potere. Nel ripercorrere nelle loro opere i traumi recenti, gli intellettuali approfondiscono altri aspetti legati alla storia del paese, come gli eventi che portarono alla scomparsa di milioni di indios nel periodo coloniale, la tratta degli schiavi e la violenza ad essa connessa, l’arrivo di più di cinque milioni di immigranti fra la fine del XIX e l’inizio del XX secolo, le secolari disuguaglianze sociali e la discriminazione dei più poveri. A study in deep is proposed on the ways and time by means of which the Brazilian writers have processed the memory and trauma experienced during the dictatorship in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. The need to bring back such a matter is for it is again a topical subject both for mourning and pain overcoming requires a long and complex process and for the attempt to ideological and political manipulation of the past by various powerful groups. When retracing recent trauma in their works, intellectuals deepen other issues related to the history of the country such as the events that led to the death of millions of Indians during the colonial period, the slave trade and all the violence associated, the arrival of over five million immigrants between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the secular social inequalities and discrimination of the poorest. |
