Contents | This course is aimed at proposing an overview on the relation between religion and human rights through a twofold pattern. On one hand, religions are normative worlds coexisting with secular legal systems. Adopting an intercultural model may highlight their performative role towards individuals and societies. On the other hand, freedom of religion or belief is embedded in the XX° Century political and juridical tradition of human rights recognized in international legal standard, which is, at present, put under strain by a growing global reference to national and local cultural traditions. Following this twofold path, institutions, models and specific topics will be analyzed through the lens of a critical approach, open to multidisciplinary perspectives. |
Reference texts | Learning material: Pin A., J. Witte Jr., Libertà religiosa e diritti umani. Origini e futuro tra Europa e Stati Uniti. Bologna, Il Mulino, 2024. Documents and additional lecture materials will be advised on Unistudium. Students are expected to check Unistudium to keep up-to-date with materials and learning resources throughout the course. A partially diversified program of examination may be agreed upon, provided that the general objectives of the course are granted and the proposed program is aimed at furthering personal patterns of research or fitting the needs of working students. Erasmus students may be given alternative learning material in English, upon request. In order to propose a partially specific program or material in English, students are invited to contact the teacher (silvia.angeletti@unipg.it) at the beginning of the course or, at least, in due time before the scheduled exam. |
Educational objectives | Within the overall objectives of the Degree on Philosophy and relational ethics, the course will be aimed at introducing students to the role of religious freedom among human rights and religious traditions’ standpoints on questions pertaining to rights and ethics, in order to be able to respond to religious demands in pluralistic, religiously and culturally diverse societies. Basic knowledge and understanding of the differences and common grounds between secular conception of human rights and religious traditions, in order to reflect on the proper approach to foster a harmonious coexistence in pluralistic societies. Basic knowledge of the main legal systems on religion law, in order to understand their social, political, cultural and historical features. |
Prerequisites | Attendance is open to students from plural curricula, to whom no prerequisites are applied. Additional material shall be suggested by the teacher, upon request, to make up for lack of knowledge of basic legal questions. |
