Educational objectives The teaching aims at acquiring critical and analytical tools proper to the philosophy of logic, first- and second-order logic with reference to the topic of ontological commitment.

Knowledge and Ability to Understand: The student should be familiar with the main issues concerning the philosophy of logic and reflection on the topic of relations and properties.

Applied Knowledge and Ability to Understand: The student must learn and be able to apply metalogical demonstrative strategies and strategies for extending and reducing ontological commitment.

Autonomy of judgment: The student must demonstrate autonomy of judgment in relation to the debate on the nature of properties.

Communication skills: The student must demonstrate communication, dialogue and debate skills, using appropriate technical language and exploiting correct argumentative modes.

Learning skills: The student must acquire a rational method of evaluation that enables him/her, in the course of his/her studies, to organize coherently and with critical awareness the knowledge acquired.
Prerequisites It is highly recommended (but not compulsory) to have attended an introductory course in Logic.

Extended program This course explores David Malet Armstrong's metaphysical system, the centerpiece of which is the metaphysics of states of affairs, in relation to which ontological economy, explanatory power and foundationality will be critically evaluated.
