Contents The course of "PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF MACHINE DESIGN" is proposed to apply the methods of structural design to machines and components in order to obtain an efficient product development. In this module some general issues relating to machines loading conditions and to how the product development should orient itself to guarantee safety and efficiency of machines will be analyzed.
Reference texts Richard Budynas and Keith Nisbett, Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design, McGraw-Hill Education
Educational objectives The student will acquire knowledge necessary to develop the structural design of a generic mechanical product, in relation to the environmental operating situations.
Prerequisites To understand and be able to apply some of the techniques described in the teaching, preliminary knowledge of “System Mechanics” is required.
Teaching methods The module is organized in:
• Classroom lectures during which the topics of the course will be illustrated.
• In parallel, classroom exercises will be carried out to allow students to independently develop the design of simple mechanical elements.
All the teaching material used during the course is available through the Unistudium platform.

Other information Further information is available through the Unistudium page of the course. The teacher is available for consultations at the end of each lesson; consultations with the teacher in person or through the Microsoft Teams platform can also be arranged at other times.
Learning verification modality The exam for the course of “Product Design” of which the module “Principles and Methods of Machine Design” consists of two parts:
Multiple choice written exam on theoretical topics.
Written exam whit technical exercises.
The multiple-choice exam is aimed at verifying the knowledge of all the topics covered.
The written exam with technical exercises is aimed at verifying the ability to apply the methodologies acquired in class.
Extended program The product and the specifications that guide its design. Statistical analysis. Introduction to the concepts of probability and reliability. Materials. Characteristics and properties of materials. How to choose a material according to the product and its functions. The operating conditions of the product. Methods of analysis and design methods
