| Contenuti | Classic American Literature and "Philosophies of Composition", from E. A. Poe to the late 19th century. The course is meant to give students an overview of the 19th century in American culture, and at the same tine a deep approach to some funding texts of the American Renaissance both in its strict and in its enlarged canon. |

| Obiettivi formativi | Students are supposed to gain a detailed knowledge of themes and styles of the authors in the syllabus. The cultural context of 19th century philosophy and literature in the USA should be studied in depth. The study of literature will be deeply grounded in the history of ideas, society, and the arts of the period. By the end of the course, students will have to be able to identify literary texts, cultural periods and the history of critcism in the United States of America. |
| Prerequisiti | Skills in reading and speaking in English, at least from level B2 |
| Metodi didattici | Le lezioni frontali si alterneranno a lezioni di studio svolto in autonomia. Traditional classes will be taught once a week, and directions will be given for hours of self study that students can manage according to their schedules. Students are expected to read the texts that are the objects of the course and conduct a research on a topic of their choice, after agreeing on it with the instructor. |
